FAQ

Where can I park?

Metered street parking is available around Washington Square and throughout downtown Newport. The Mary Street Parking Lot, which is a “self pay” lot, is a short walk to the tour departure point. For details about other City parking lots click here.

How do I arrange a private tour?
Private tours are offered year-round. Click here for more details.

Can I bring my dog?
Service pets are permitted on tours, but we regret that we cannot allow pets on history walking tours or historic site tours.

What about strollers?
We offer family-friendly walking tours. Strollers, and children, are welcome to join the fun. Most of Newport’s quaint streets are paved but others have cobblestone so it can be a bit of a bumpy ride at points.

Do any of your tours include transportation?
No, we do not provide transportation or have a step-on guide program (tour guides for busses, trolleys, etc.) Newport History Tours explores many of Newport’s historic neighborhoods on foot as we believe the city, its rich history and beautiful architecture are best appreciated in this fashion.

How far can I expect to walk during your typical 75 minute tour?
Most tours are about a ¼ to 3/4 of a mile walk around Newport’s Old Quarter, depending upon the tour.

How long are your tours?

Tours range from 60-90 minutes depending upon the tour topic and route.  Most tours are 75 minutes long. Please see the Tour Descriptions page which lists the approximate length for each tour.

Why are “reservations recommended”? Can I just show-up?
Our tour sizes are limited to offer you the best possible experience. Making advance reservations guarantees your spot. It also helps the tour organizers know if there is a need to add additional guides to best accommodate seasonal demand.

What is your cancellation policy?
We offer tour refunds when requested at least 24 hours in advance of the tour’s departure. Email tours@newporthistory.org and/or call 401-841-8770 to request a cancelation.

If it rains will my tour be canceled?
We will cancel a tour if there is severe inclement weather, such as lightning, ice, gale winds, blizzard conditions, etc. Most tours will depart if it’s raining.

Why is the tour theme different from what was advertised?

Tours are limited to guide and site availability. On rare occasions the tour that’s offered may differ from what was initially advertised.
